End the H-1B program: MTG's proposed legislation seeks to prevent companies from lowering American wages with overseas employees

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Proposal to Scrap H-1B Visa Program

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has announced plans to propose legislation aimed at abolishing the H-1B visa program, which has sparked controversy over the years.

On Thursday, Greene indicated her intention to introduce a bill that would phase out the program “aggressively.” The H-1B visa program currently permits foreign nationals to enter the U.S. for employment in various professional fields.

According to Greene, her legislation would remove the option for visa holders to pursue citizenship, compelling them to return to their home countries once their visas lapse. “My bill would take away the path to citizenship and force visa holders to return home when their visas expire,” she stated.

While the program’s guidelines demand that applicants demonstrate “theoretical and practical application of a highly specialized body of knowledge,” many critics argue it has been exploited to bring in foreign workers, which they claim has negatively impacted job availability and wage levels for American employees.

“For too long, Big Tech, AI companies, hospital systems, and corporations at large have exploited this system to undermine hard-working Americans,” Greene remarked in a statement.

She emphasized that her upcoming bill seeks to prioritize American workers across all sectors. Greene believes strongly in the abilities and potential of the American populace.

Interestingly, her proposed legislation includes a single exception: allowing a cap of 10,000 visas per year specifically for medical professionals, although this exception would also be phased out over a decade.

“My bill is temporary and restores the original purpose of visas,” Greene asserted in a video posted online. She added that the intention is to address specific occupational needs at particular times, reinforcing that residency through these visas should not be permanent.

In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump voiced his support for the H-1B program, arguing that it plays a crucial role in attracting specific talent and providing training to American workers in specialized fields.

On another note, U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer expressed concerns about potential abuses of the H-1B system by some companies. She stated the importance of ensuring that American workers are safeguarded in any case.

Greene summed up her view by declaring, “If we have talented Americans ready to work and succeed, there is no need to import foreign labor.” She believes that ending the H-1B program would significantly benefit American workers and contribute positively to the housing market, as they wouldn’t have to compete with imported labor.
