Tuchel Responds to Criticism After World Cup Defeat

Manager Thomas Tuchel is not looking for advice on World Cup strategy from foreign coaches.

Following England’s 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina, Tuchel has pushed back against President Donald Trump’s critiques of his game plan, saying he’d prefer not to take guidance from the former president.

“Would you really use Donald Trump as a reputable source in this situation?” Tuchel remarked when asked about Trump’s comments during a press briefing.

Just a couple of days after England’s heartbreaking loss, Tuchel reflected on the crucial moments of the match, particularly the second half where England struggled defensively. “We were too passive. I, um, regret nothing about my choices,” he stated. “The game shifted, and I tried to adapt by making decisions based on my instincts and the team’s needs. Yes, the responsibility falls on me because we didn’t win, but I stand by my decisions.”

Since the defeat, Tuchel has faced significant backlash, particularly because it denied England a shot at their first championship in six decades. The Three Lions were initially in the lead but conceded a last-minute equalizer and then the decisive goal in stoppage time, leading to a dramatic turn in the game.

Many have questioned why Tuchel opted to make three defensive changes after going ahead in the game, suggesting it stifled their momentum.

While accusations from football commentators are commonplace, Tuchel faced unique criticism from Trump this time. At a FIFA event, Trump remarked, “You know, I played golf with a great English player, Harry Kane. I think he was mismanaged by switching to defense when they were ahead. It was a curious choice for sure.”

Despite the criticisms, Tuchel is still viewed as an important asset for the team, even amidst calls for a management change. Reports indicate that the plan is to retain him through the Euros despite a tumultuous exit from the World Cup.

A victory against France in the third-place playoff this Saturday might help shift the narrative surrounding Tuchel.

Tuchel shared, “This pain—it’s ours. It’s something we have to live with and accept. This is a hard loss to bear. We must focus on overcoming it, and that process starts now.”
