Adams Critiques Mamdani’s Plans for NYPD Task Force

On Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams strongly criticized socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for his promises to reduce the elite NYPD task force in the wake of recent mass shootings in Manhattan.

Adams pointed out that, if elected, Mamdani aims to disband the Police Department’s Strategic Response Group (SRG), a unit that plays a vital role during citywide emergencies.

“They are the elite of the department,” Adams stated during an interview with CNBC, discussing Mamdani’s intentions regarding the special operations team.

He emphasized that the tactical unit that responded first to Monday’s tragic shooting is composed of “well-trained” officers adept at handling “very dangerous situations.”

“Dismantling components of law enforcement designed for specific roles can be extremely dangerous,” he added.

Adams noted that a lack of understanding of these roles could actually undermine law enforcement efforts.

In December, Mamdani had pledged on social media to disband the SRG, citing a desire to address past grievances with the NYPD.

According to Adams, police work doesn’t have routine tasks; officers must be prepared to respond to violence at any moment. “I think this is a wrong decision, and it won’t enhance public safety,” he said. “It’s not an experiment, but rather an accumulated experience.”

The mayor’s comments were made after Mamdani reiterated his commitment to dismantling the task force during his campaign.

He also expressed concern for the victims of recent incidents, stating he keeps their families and NYPD officials in his thoughts. “Thank you to all our first responders on the ground,” he wrote.

While Adams defended the task force, NYPD Detective Chief John Chell echoed his sentiments, stating that the SRG undergoes the best training available. “They give me a level of confidence as incident commanders,” he noted.

As discussions continue, the NYPD faces a wave of scrutiny, particularly from past sentiments expressed on social media.
