Ex-Democrat Up-and-Comer Taken Into Custody Again for Drug Offenses

Former Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Arrested in Alabama

On Thursday, police apprehended a former Democratic candidate for governor in Florida, Andrew Gillum, in Daphne, Alabama.

He was taken into custody for allegedly possessing dangerous drugs, including marijuana and related paraphernalia. Gillum, who was the Tallahassee mayor, had a noteworthy run in the 2018 gubernatorial race, winning the Democratic primary decisively but ultimately losing to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis by a slim margin of just 0.4% in the general election.

The election was fiercely contested right up until the end, and it remains a topic of discussion among political analysts.

In a troubling incident back in 2020, Gillum reportedly experienced a meth overdose at a Miami hotel where he was found alongside a male escort who claimed to be a porn star. Despite these incidents, Gillum is a family man, married with three children.

As of now, the Baldwin Sheriff’s Office and Gillum have not responded to inquiries regarding his recent arrest, and the Daphne Police Department has stated they typically do not comment on arrests.

Adding to his legal troubles, in 2022, Gillum was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that included wire fraud and conspiracy. It was alleged that he and the CEO of the National Black Justice Coalition, Sharon Lettman Hicks, committed fraud by securing funds from various organizations and individuals between 2016 and 2019.

In a trial that followed, jurors acquitted him of lying to the FBI, but they were unable to reach a consensus on the fraud charges, leaving many questions unanswered about the case.
