A conservative political action committee seeking to counter efforts by former Obama administration officials to select left-leaning judges to state courts announced its top priorities Friday.
According to a press release first obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) is looking to back conservative judges in six states with seven-figure ad spending this fall, an effort that has become crucial to Republicans in recent years due to efforts by former President Barack Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder to use the courts to redistrict congressional districts, particularly in Republican-leaning states.
“We know that redistricting is no longer a decade-long battle, but an annual one, which is why we must elect more constitutional conservatives to state Supreme Court elections across the country this year and stop liberals, backed by millions of dollars in dark money, from overturning conservative-led justices,” said Dee Duncan, president of RLSC's Judicial Fairness Initiative (JFI). “JFI remains committed to stopping Eric Holder and Barack Obama's handpicked cronies from tipping the balance of power in these critical judicial battleground states in 2024 and electing conservative justices who will fight to blind justice.”
The RLSC focuses on judicial elections in Arizona, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.
The state Supreme Court has been a particular target for Holder's National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NRDC).
“State supreme courts have the power to review and, if necessary, overturn unfair or unconstitutional redistricting plans,” NRDC's Website “Having fair courts is essential to upholding democratic principles,” he said.
NRDC considers North Carolina's Supreme Court to be “ideological” and has listed the state as a priority for this fall's elections, along with those in Michigan, Montana, Ohio and Texas.

“We are fighting for our lives to protect and restore fundamental freedoms, and our courts are on the front lines,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, in a press release in May. “Those who oppose abortion access, LGBTQ+ equality, and democracy itself are tipping the scales of justice by forming a court to carry out their destructive agenda. If this continues, we will surely see even more devastating decisions that uphold abortion bans, restrict care like IVF, and deny dignity to transgender people. We cannot lose the fight for a fair and unbiased court.”

The RSLC also released a video on Friday that will be part of the advertising campaign, in which it says its justice efforts are “not politically motivated but the first line of defense” in the “fight to blind justice.”
“America's courts are under siege, as radical liberals, led by Barack Obama and Eric Holder, weaponize the rule of law to redraw maps, tilt the scales and enforce their agenda,” the ad's narrator says.
“The fight for our courts is a fight for our future,” the ad concludes.
