President Donald Trump has garnered support from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the NATO military agreement with Ukraine; this marks a significant moment since Trump returned to the White House recently. The warning directed at the Kremlin indicated that participation in a peace agreement with Ukraine is crucial, or else they would face severe international sanctions on leading exports and oil sales.

Opinions on this strategy vary. Some defend it, while others question its adequacy in curbing Putin’s military ambitions in Ukraine. One security expert mentioned that while the approach may eventually be effective, it could take years to see real results.

Meanwhile, NATO Chief lauded Trump’s decision to sell weapons as a critical move aimed at pushing Putin toward negotiations. It’s a strategy, the Chief believes, that could yield positive results in the long run. Interestingly, Trump’s campaign centered around ending the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, but not everyone in the Republican Party seems to back his approach. For example, Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly expressed her opposition to sending arms to Ukraine.

Freitz noted Trump’s previous direct actions against Iran, suggesting that such decisions demonstrate his flexibility as a leader. He emphasized that Trump’s “America first” philosophy reflects a deliberate approach to national security.

Trump also hinted at wanting Europe to take a more prominent role in the conflict, though he faced some pushback, particularly from Vice President JD Vance, who emphasized the challenges in supplying the necessary arms. Nonetheless, Trump remains committed to selling arms from NATO nations to Ukraine.

Experts argue that Ukraine’s ability to negotiate peace will largely depend on developments on the battlefield. During a recent defense briefing, John Hardy highlighted the need for Ukraine to acquire long-range strike capabilities to effectively target Russian missile and drone production facilities.

Hardy also mentioned that Ukraine shouldn’t just focus on defense; they should be able to target offensive resources. He foresees that as long as Putin perceives the war as manageable, he will continue to pursue his goals. Transforming that dynamic could involve enhancing Ukraine’s air defenses, aiming to apply economic pressure on Russia.

Conversely, there are opinions suggesting the conflict may only cease once a truce is established. Freitz pointed out that such an agreement might entail both sides halting military actions for a set period. He imagines a scenario where Ukraine would agree not to join NATO for a time, in exchange for military support from Western allies.

Overall, navigating this complex situation appears lengthy and will require patience, as history shows that peace negotiations can be intricate and time-consuming. Freitz believes Trump could influence Putin’s strategy in the long term.
