The investigation into a suspect who left a pipe bomb outside the Democratic National Committee on January 6, 2021, has been swamped with conspiracy theories over the years. For nearly five years, the case went unsolved, leading to various unfounded claims, with some attributing the incident to former police officers and others suggesting it was an operation by the FBI itself.
However, following the arrest of Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old from Woodbridge, Virginia, authorities are eager to uncover the full story behind the episode.
The motive remains unclear at this time. Still, officials indicated they are examining the suspect’s past for any indications of “anarchist tendencies.”
This investigation has been a particularly critical issue for the FBI, facing criticism from lawmakers earlier this year regarding their lack of progress in identifying the person responsible.
The failed bombing is an inside job theory
The fact that the bomb did not detonate led some to speculate that the entire incident could be part of an undercover operation by the FBI. One vocal proponent of this theory, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, had remarked on his podcast about a potential “massive cover-up,” suggesting that either anti-Trump insiders or FBI agents were involved. He asserts that he has no doubts this was intentionally orchestrated.
The FBI has recently offered a $500,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest, coinciding with the recent developments in the case.
Debunked Theory Previously Associated with Capitol Police Officers
Last month, a conservative media outlet reported on a draft memo that linked a former Capitol Police officer to the bombing attempt. Still, the FBI quickly dismissed this narrative as “completely inaccurate and misleading.” The individual in question, who now works for a different agency, cleared her name by providing evidence of her whereabouts at the time of the incident.
Frustrated lawmakers called for progress
In the past four years, Congress expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of significant advancements in the investigation. A report in January criticized federal authorities for not keeping lawmakers updated on the progress. It highlighted that despite having promising data and numerous stakeholders, the FBI had diverted resources away from the investigation in early 2021.
After joining the FBI, Bongino prioritized this case and mentioned that new resources were being allocated to expedite the investigation.
There was no new information leading to the arrest of the suspect
Even though the FBI offered a reward for information on the suspect, it turns out that the arrest was made without any new tips from the public. Instead, authorities revisited existing evidence. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, no new leads contributed to this breakthrough; it was the result of persistent investigative work by the FBI.
The investigation involved examining the suspect’s shoes, identified as Nike Air Max Speed Turfs, which helped narrow down a list of possible buyers through credit card records.
