Father cautions about fraternity hazing risks following son's death at Penn State

The father of a student who lost his life during a 2017 hazing incident at Penn State University has issued a warning to both students and parents about the dangers of fraternity culture. Jim Piazza’s son, Timothy, was recruited by the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in February 2017. At a bid acceptance party, he and other pledges were compelled to drink large amounts of vodka and other hard liquor.

Jim described how these pledges were made to participate in a chaotic drinking “obstacle course,” where they had to tackle various alcohol stations. “They forced us to drink in all sorts of ways,” he recalled. After the event, things took a tragic turn when Timothy was moved to a sofa and left alone. He attempted to escape but ultimately fell down stairs, leading to severe injuries including brain bleeding, a ruptured spleen, and collapsed lungs due to his own vomit. Jim noted that fraternity members later found Timothy unresponsive yet took an agonizing 45 minutes to call for help. Sadly, Timothy died over 12 hours later, the cause officially attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage.

In the aftermath, Jim and his wife, Evelyn, have become advocates, sharing their son’s story and addressing the hazards associated with hazing. They have pushed for legislative changes, resulting in the passage of the Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing Law in Pennsylvania, which enforces stricter reporting and accountability measures in hazing situations.

Jim often speaks to Greek life organizations about the severe consequences of hazing, including criminal implications, stressing that no community is immune. “It can happen to anyone,” he warned, urging parents to have proactive discussions with their children about safety and accountability. He pointed out that many fraternity members face legal charges, often with steep legal costs. Over 20 individuals were charged in connection with Timothy’s case, with some receiving prison sentences.

Reflecting on the impact of his advocacy, Jim aims to instill awareness and foster a culture of accountability. He believes that pledges can exert their power by collectively standing against harmful traditions. Though he criticized certain fraternity chapters for clinging to outdated hazing practices, he remains supportive of Greek life’s potential for fostering community and leadership.

While the Piazza family works diligently to raise awareness, it’s a somber reminder of the ongoing dialogue surrounding fraternity culture and safety. Their journey underscores the importance of vigilance, not only for students but also for parents and communities, to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
