California Father Paralyzed While Attempting to Save Child from Rip Current

A California father of five, Josh Collette, became paralyzed from the neck down while trying to rescue a child caught in a rip current at Riviera Beach in San Clemente. This incident occurred on August 15, as reported by his sister, Hillary Collette, to local news outlet KTLA.

During the tragic event, a mother initially entered the water to reach her child, estimated to be around 7 or 8 years old. However, Collette, 42, pushed past her, diving in himself to assist the frightened child.

Collette’s sister revealed that as he entered the ocean, he struck either a sandbar or some rocks, resulting in immediate injury. Witnesses quickly rushed to help him out of the water. He later told his wife that he feared he had broken his neck.

Fortunately, the child Collette was attempting to save was successfully pulled to safety before he was brought out of the water himself, as his sister confirmed. After being treated at the hospital, the family learned from doctors that Josh was paralyzed from the neck down.

Despite his condition, his sister shared that he has been able to communicate by moving his lips, although he is currently unable to speak. Family members remain hopeful that he will regain his ability to talk soon.

To assist with mounting medical expenses and long-term rehabilitation, Josh’s family set up a GoFundMe page. They noted how challenging the journey ahead would be, saying, “The road ahead will be long, and the recovery will not be easy, we’re holding on to hope.”

Expressions of gratitude were evident in the fundraising campaign, with the family stating, “We believe in miracles! We’ve already seen so many and thank everyone for the love, support, and prayers! Please keep praying for miracles! It’s working!”

As of the latest updates, the family shared the need for time before Josh can go off his medication, noting, “Yesterday was very positive and productive! It was hard to have a day with less progress. He hates medicine; he’s trying hard to get off of everything… but that’s going to take some time.”

The GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $110,000 as of Sunday night, reflecting the community’s support during this difficult time for the Collette family.
