A Florida father was tragically shot and killed after attempting to break up a fight between a couple outside his daughter’s elementary school. Daryl Hill, 56, had just dropped her off on her first day at Wolf Lake Elementary in Apopka when the incident occurred on Tuesday morning.
Hill, who leaves behind his wife, two adult children, and a 10-year-old daughter, was described by his son Damon as having “the biggest heart in the world.” He was known for his kindness and non-judgmental nature, always willing to help others.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses reported a man and woman fighting inside a vehicle, which then crashed into another vehicle. The altercation moved outside where Hill tried to intervene.
“A good Samaritan who witnessed the altercation tried to help and was shot,” the sheriff’s department stated. They identified the shooter as 26-year-old Raul Lionel Vasquez, who has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Daryl’s wife, Suzanne, shared her sorrow, explaining that her husband was a caring individual who always tried to help those in need. “I think that’s what ultimately cost him his life,” she said.
The shooting took place at the intersection of Plymouth-Solent Road and West Poncan Road. Before the incident, both Vasquez and the woman involved, Kaidi Honaker, were observed fighting inside a white Chevrolet pickup truck. This escalated into a heated argument on the sidewalk.
Witnesses noted that before Hill intervened, Vasquez was seen making aggressive gestures towards Honaker. After Hill approached, he reportedly got into a confrontation with Vasquez, leading to a physical scuffle. Onlookers noted Hill was trying to flee when Vasquez retrieved a shotgun from his truck and shot him.
Vasquez’s explanations to authorities varied, but he claimed Hill was attacking him. At the time of the shooting, he was out on bail for a previous charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Subsequently, a judge revoked his bail, and he remains in custody facing serious charges.
