Fauci Criticizes Obama Amid Pandemic Fallout
Anthony Fauci, who formerly led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has openly referred to ex-President Barack Obama as a “hopeless idiot” and a “pathological liar,” especially after public perceptions of his leadership dwindled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a diary entry shared prior to Fauci’s scheduled testimony, Rep. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who heads the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, reflected on Fauci’s mindset throughout the pandemic, suggesting that his newfound fame was a priority for him. Many of his entries reveal a sense of awe regarding his own popularity, and he often expressed excitement about his media presence, even describing his fame as “explosive and truly unimaginable.”
However, as public sentiment shifted, Fauci appeared uncertain about how to respond, ultimately seeking support from those on the far left to mend his tarnished reputation. Negative press began to accumulate as the public grew weary of perceived dishonesty and hypocrisy, particularly concerning the vaccination narrative, which had shifted; vaccines had not stopped transmission nor prevented infection, contrary to earlier public health messaging.
For instance, in April 2022, Fauci claimed, “We’re using lockdowns to get people vaccinated so we don’t have a spike in infections when we lift lockdowns.”
Moreover, the White Coast Waste Project highlighted various controversial studies under Fauci’s watch. Notably, experiments on beagles were halted by the Trump administration amid ethical concerns.
In his diary, Fauci expressed frustration about receiving countless FaceTime calls from an unknown number, which he suspected was an ongoing harassment campaign linked to the beagle research. He noted, “It is now abundantly clear that this is a concerted effort to discredit me and assassinate my character.”
As his public relations challenges deepened, Fauci sought out Obama’s guidance. He recorded in his diary that on November 4, 2021, Leslie Dach reached out to Obama to inquire how the former president might help address the barrage of defamatory stories originating from right-wing news outlets and certain members of Congress.
According to Fauci, Obama responded with an offer of assistance, expressing concern over the negative attention directed at Fauci. During their conversation, Obama remarked that he felt like a “civilian” and hadn’t dealt with such attacks as an individual; he then suggested that he could contact key administration figures to counter the negative narratives.
Fauci relayed Obama’s willingness to intervene with officials like Ron Klain or Jeff Zients to ensure the government would make a strong effort to refute these attacks. He even mentioned how Trump Jr. was merchandising T-shirts with slogans like “Fauci Kills Puppies.”
Fauci recounted Obama’s candid words, calling Trump Jr. a “fucking idiot,” though he later apologized for the vulgarity, while still branding Trump as “a pathological liar and a hopeless idiot.” This assertion is somewhat ironic given Fauci’s own history of misrepresenting virus-related statistics.
Additionally, Fauci noted Obama’s disappointment that moderate Republicans had not defended him against the slander he faced. Subsequently, he wrote about a fruitful phone conversation with Eric Schultz, which Obama had facilitated, expressing gratitude for the ex-president’s help.
Ultimately, these diary revelations suggest that after the scandal over animal testing, Obama was involved in a discreet campaign to mitigate damage and defend Fauci against emerging criticisms.
