Prunella Scales Passes Away at 93

Veteran television actress Prunella Scales passed away at her home on October 27, at the age of 93.

She was perhaps best known for portraying Sybil Fawlty in the beloved comedy series “Fawlty Towers.” Scales died “peacefully at home in London yesterday” after dealing with dementia in her later years, as shared by her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, on X. They mentioned that their cherished mother was watching “Fawlty Towers” just the day before her passing.

Samuel and Joseph expressed gratitude for those who provided care to Pru during her final days, noting that she was “comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.”

“Fawlty Towers” aired on BBC2 for only two seasons—initially in 1975 and then in 1979. Despite having just six half-hour episodes per season, its impact was profound, earning it the title of the No. 1 British television program ever in a 2000 poll by the British Film Institute.

Throughout her career, Scales appeared in numerous notable shows, such as “The Marriage Lines,” “Mapp & Lucia,” and “After Henry.” She also starred in the Channel 4 series “Great Canal Journeys” alongside her late husband, Timothy West, whom she married in 1963. Unfortunately, West passed away in November 2024.

Scales had roles in films like “Hobson’s Choice,” as a daughter of Charles Laughton, and “Waltz of the Toreadors,” as a daughter of Peter Sellers. Other appearances included parts in “Room at the Top,” “Howards End,” and “The Boys from Brazil,” among others.

In recognition of her contributions, Scales was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992.

She is survived by her two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
