Fed-up sheriff tells parents to ‘do your job’ — warns he’ll ‘perp-walk’ kids, release mug shots over hoax school threats

A fed-up Florida sheriff recently warned parents that his department “Criminal arrested” Police arrested kids for threatening to commit school shootings and released their mugshots. Until the end Follow that warning.

At a press conference last week, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told community members that his police department has been inundated with school shooting threats and has already spent $21,000 investigating the reports.

“We are going to publicly shame them and their parents.”

“This is completely out of control. This is the end,” he said at the start of a news conference.

Chitwood noted that Fortify Florida, an app that allows residents to report suspicious activity, received at least 54 reports in one day, many of which he said were fake.

“So, school district investigators were working around the clock to investigate these reports, and ultimately, they all turned out to be false,” he explained.

Chitwood said police have arrested seven people for receiving “death threats” so far in 2024, noting one student was arrested for attempting to bring a loaded firearm to a school game, and said 11 weapons had been brought onto school grounds.

“Parents, you don't want to raise your kids, so I'm going to start raising them,” Chitwood declared.

He explained that in the future, if a child is arrested on suspicion of threatening a school, the police will make public the arrested person's facial photo and make an “arrest of the culprit.”

“Every time we make an arrest, a photo of your child will be made public, and if I could, I would take your child away and let everybody see what your child is doing,” Chitwood said. “If I can somehow find out that the parents knew what was going on and didn't do anything, you'll be taken away with them.”

Chitwood said police plan to put up posters with photos of all the children arrested and the schools they attend.

“Now I'm going to publicly shame them and their parents,” he said, “So parents, do your job. Don't let Sheriff Chitwood raise your kids.”

He called the situation “completely absurd.”

“Talk to any family that's lost a loved one in a school shooting. These idiots think it's funny. Talk to those parents and you'll see how funny this is,” Chitwood said. “It's not funny. We're coming and we're going to get you. We're going to publicly shame you. I know parents that are currently losing $11,000 each because someone else is footing the bill for this.”

A few days later, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office made good on its promise, releasing a mugshot and video of an 11-year-old boy being taken into police custody for allegedly threatening to shoot up a school.

According to police, the boy “had a list of names and targets written down,” and told police it was all a joke.

“As promised, we have arrested a Creekside Middle School student who threatened to commit a mass shooting at Creekside Middle School or Silver Sands Middle School,” Chitwood posted on X.

The post was accompanied by videos and photos of items seized from the boy's home, including “air guns, fake ammunition, knives, swords and other weapons which the boy had shown off to other students in the video.”

The child was charged with a felony.

“I can and will release the names and photos of the minors who are committing these felonies, intimidating students, disrupting schools and draining law enforcement resources,” Chitwood said.
