Feds probing GM engine failures, including popular Silverados

U.S. auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into complaints that certain V8-powered General Motors cars, including the best-selling Silverado, can seize up without warning.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced Thursday that it has received 39 complaints from users of GM vehicles equipped with L87 V8 engines and is investigating an estimated 877,710 vehicles.

NHTSA said the complainants reported “no prior detection of engine failure,” which could lead to an increased risk of crashes resulting in personal injury or property damage. Regulators say bearing failure can cause engine seizure and connecting rod damage to the engine block.
