U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents assigned to the San Diego Field Office seized tons of illegal drugs in May, seizing more than 11,000 pounds of methamphetamine in a single smuggling attempt — the third-largest methamphetamine seizure in CBP history.
On May 20, CBP officers assigned to the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility inspected a trailer truck transporting pumpkins from Mexico to California. The officer escorted the driver, who had a valid border crossing card, to a secondary inspection area.
During the secondary inspection, a non-intrusive scanner detected an anomaly, which led to a physical search of the trailer. The search uncovered 1,419 packages containing a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Authorities valued the 11,469 pounds of methamphetamine at more than $18 million.
In total, during the month of May, officers from the San Diego Field Office seized more than 16,000 pounds of methamphetamine, approximately 562 pounds of fentanyl, approximately 914 pounds of cocaine, 22 pounds of heroin, and more than four pounds of marijuana.
CBP officials said the drugs were found in 145 smuggling attempts, with the total value of the seized items amounting to $38.3 million.
“These extraordinary efforts are a testament to the hard work and extraordinary work of our agency personnel,” CBP San Diego Field Operations Chief Sidney K. Aki said in a written statement. “These drug interdictions not only disrupt a criminal network, but also underscore the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.”
The seizures occurred at airports and seaports in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and San Diego, as well as Calexico East and West, Tecate and Andrade ports of entry.
The suspect was turned over to ICE Homeland Security Investigations.
