Fetterman: Calls to eliminate ICE are 'wrong and unacceptable'

Senator John Fetterman Distances Himself from Progressive Views on Immigration

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) made headlines on Thursday with a social media post defending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), signaling a move away from the party’s progressive wing.

In his message, he stated, “ICE is an important job for our country,” labeling opposition to it as “100 percent inappropriate and outrageous.”

This statement comes amid protests from some Democrats who have rallied against ICE actions during former President Trump’s strict immigration policies. There have been various demonstrations, including some arrests and charges linked to actions at ICE detention centers.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), a prominent member of the Progressive Caucus, criticized the agency as a “fraudulent institution” with no accountability, echoing sentiments she shared in a prior post from 2018 advocating for its abolishment.

Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) mentioned her ongoing efforts to push for ICE’s dissolution in a recent fundraising email.

When questioned about the movement to abolish ICE during an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) did not directly address the push but reiterated his disapproval of ICE’s methods.

Fetterman previously expressed to NBC News that he doesn’t identify as a progressive. “I think I’m a Democrat who believes strongly in choices and other issues. But with Israel, I’ll align differently,” he said. He also emphasized the significance of immigration issues to him, stating, “we need to address it effectively.”

In a follow-up message after his original post, Fetterman reiterated his support for immigration reform aimed at protecting undocumented individuals who are not a threat. “I absolutely support amnesty for hardworking, law-abiding migrants,” he noted, adding a commitment to deporting those involved in criminal activities.

He concluded by recognizing the essential role migrants play in contributing to the nation’s economy.
