A firefighter team in Connecticut was called to rescue a 40-year-old man who got stuck in a playground slide this past Saturday afternoon. This man, who remains unidentified, found himself trapped in a twisty slide at an elementary school in Vernon around 4:30 PM.
Reports indicate the man got wedged with a “snapped leg and head” partway through the slide. It’s still uncertain if he was there with someone else or chose to ride the slide alone.
Initial responders arrived quickly but soon recognized that they would need additional assistance to free the man effectively.
Compounding the challenge, the hot weather and the blazing sun made the slide uncomfortably warm, adding to the man’s distress, as mentioned by the fire department.
While awaiting the full firefighting crew, medics provided oxygen to the man, who was clearly uncomfortable, and set up ventilation to help cool him down.
Once the fire truck arrived, the team wasted no time. They secured the slide to the ladder and started using power tools to cut through the tough plastic.
In about 30 minutes, the middle-aged man was freed just two weeks before the school year begins, though it came at the cost of the slide’s integrity.
Photos from the scene captured the man in a fetal position within the cut slide as a rescuer assisted him.
Although EMS offered to take him to a medical facility for evaluation, he opted against it, stating he hadn’t sustained any injuries.
The Vernon Fire Department commented, saying it’s not an everyday service call for fire crews, yet their professionalism throughout the incident was commendable.
Local residents and social media users reacted amusingly to the situation. One commenter noted the awkwardness of getting stuck while another pointed out the numerous photos taken during the rescue.
Some discussions highlighted how being trapped in tight spaces, like slides, can induce severe feelings of claustrophobia, not to mention the embarrassment that can come from such a predicament.
In a more tragic incident in Arizona, authorities discovered a man who died after getting stuck in a water pipe while seeking help, necessitating the dismantling of the pipeline to recover his body.
