Plane Crash in Texas Claims Five Lives
The identities of the five individuals who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in central Texas have been made public. They were on their way to a pickleball tournament.
The victims included four members of the Amarillo Pickleball Club: Hayden Dillard, Seren Wilson, Brooke Skypala, and Stacey Hedrick. The pilot was Justin Appling.
Dan Dyer, the president of the Amarillo Pickleball Club, expressed his grief, noting that he had played many games with the four deceased players. “I awarded them medals; they were exceptional players, and they were poised to win more,” Dyer remarked. “There are numerous tournaments each weekend. Some get hooked on it and just keep traveling for competitions.”
Authorities reported that a small plane crashed near Hicks Field, Texas, leading to some semi-truck fires in the area.
The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the incident. As of now, the cause of the crash remains unclear.
The aircraft went down late Thursday evening in Wimberley, a town situated about 40 miles southwest of Austin.
Dyer mentioned that another plane departed from Amarillo for the same tournament, landing safely at New Braunfels airport, about 30 miles northeast of San Antonio.
The pilot of that second aircraft reported that he hadn’t received any communication from the downed plane. Air traffic control indicated some unusual movement from the troubled plane, prompting them to ensure everything was alright.
At least one pilot on site confirmed that the plane’s emergency location system had sent out a distress signal, leading air traffic control to call 911 for assistance.
According to the National Weather Service, the weather in New Braunfels was mostly cloudy prior to the crash, with thunderstorms emerging a couple of hours afterwards.
Wimberley, home to about 3,000 residents, along with New Braunfels, a larger tourist spot with approximately 116,000 residents, are popular destinations in the Texas Hill Country.
