Emergency Landing Due to In-Flight Incident
A Lufthansa flight, Flight 431, traveling from Chicago to Germany had to make an emergency stop in Boston on October 25. This unusual landing came after what appeared to be a violent altercation involving an Indian national.
Reports indicate that the man in question allegedly stabbed two 17-year-old boys with a metal fork and also slapped a female passenger during the chaotic situation. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the victims don’t seem to be severe, although their exact condition hasn’t been disclosed.
Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect, identified as Praneeth Kumar Ushiripalli, 28, raised his hand to mimic a gun, placing it in his mouth and pretending to pull a trigger—an act that added to the unsettling events.
Ushiripalli was in the U.S. on a student visa, enrolled in a master’s program in Biblical studies. However, it appears he currently lacks legal status, according to the Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office.
In a sequence of events that unfolded mid-flight, Ushiripalli reportedly punched one of the victims, who was asleep, before striking another in the back of the head. Crew members intervened and, during the struggle to restrain him, he made the threatening gesture.
Additionally, it was noted that he tried to slap a flight attendant while also assaulting the female passenger.
Upon landing at Boston Logan International Airport, Ushiripalli was taken into custody with help from ICE enforcement agents. He now faces serious charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, with intent to inflict bodily harm while on an aircraft.
His initial court appearance hasn’t been scheduled yet. Given the nature of the incident and its occurrence within U.S. aviation jurisdiction, he could face up to 10 years in prison, fines up to $250,000, and possible deportation if convicted.
