Police Thwart Planned Takeover in Florida Beach Town
A small police department in Florida has taken proactive measures against a wave of street hijacking incidents sweeping across the country. The St. Augustine Regional Police Department utilized electronic surveillance to uncover a planned “teen takeover” at a local offshore pier before any disorder could occur.
This beach community is situated about 90 miles south of Jacksonville along the Atlantic coast. St. Augustine Beach Police Chief Daniel Carswell remarked, “We’re a beach town, so there’s always large crowds during spring break, but we’ve never seen anything organized like this solely for chaos.”
The takeover was set for mid-afternoon Thursday, according to a flyer acquired by the department, which proclaimed, “Pull up. Look up. Take over.”
In response, the department marked the flyer as “canceled” and shared this information through social media. The preparations were a collaborative effort involving local agencies.
“We work well together,” Carswell noted, highlighting the St. John’s County sheriff’s office and its Real Time Information Center (ARTIC), which had alerted authorities about the imminent event, allowing them to act preemptively.
Subsequently, officers took to social media to counter the planned takeover by announcing its cancellation. Essentially, the “canceled” flyer served as a psychological operation aimed at guiding public behavior.
Carswell emphasized that the department has a “zero tolerance” policy for anyone attempting to create disturbances at the pier. Officers were stationed at the location as a precaution in case any participants showed up, though this situation holds its own risks.
“We’re a small department with just 25 officers,” Carswell explained. “When events are unplanned, it strains our resources. That’s the real danger.” He added that the unpredictability of such events can create challenging scenarios for both officers and the local community.
“We can’t predict how many will attend; it could range from dozens to hundreds, and that’s overwhelming for our team,” he stated, mentioning the need to mobilize resources from elsewhere.
Across the U.S., numerous similar takeover incidents—often referred to as “rallies” or “sideshows”—have led to chaos, dangerous stunts, and even robberies of small businesses. Thankfully, due to the proactive measures in St. Augustine Beach, the anticipated takeover never occurred, and no charges were filed against the few individuals who appeared.
