Florida Chamber of Commerce Targets New York

Mark Wilson, the CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, recently discussed a bold new billboard campaign in Times Square aimed at New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. The ad, located prominently at Broadway and West 43rd Street, bears the message: “Thank you for your work!”

As business leaders in the U.S. point to a significant choice between free enterprise and increasing government control, Florida is making its stance clear in opposition to what it views as democratic socialism.

With a massive $1.8 trillion economy and historic wealth shifts, the Florida Chamber initiated this Times Square Campaign targeting Mayor Mamdani, highlighted as Florida’s “Economic Developer of the Year.” The campaign signals concerns over progressive taxation and socialist policies driving individuals and businesses away from New York and toward Florida.

“We aimed to express our gratitude for the jobs and businesses exiting New York, many of which are relocating to Florida,” Wilson stated. “America is at a pivotal moment. It’s vital to remember that our nation thrives on freedom and free enterprise. There seems to be a movement seeking to undermine these principles, and historically, that approach has failed.”

Florida’s Economic Resilience

Wilson continued to illustrate the potential pitfalls of policies being implemented in New York. “What Mayor Mamdani is promoting is detrimental, not just for New Yorkers but for the nation as a whole. We have a choice—between free enterprise, which is the backbone of American society, and the alternative, which threatens to dismantle it. Our aim with this campaign is to steer the national conversation back towards free enterprise.”

Aside from holding Mamdani accountable, the Chamber’s campaign is also spotlighting how tax increases in blue states might weaken the tax base, with tax cuts potentially bolstering total revenue through growth. According to migration data from the IRS, Florida gains approximately $2.4 million in net taxable income every hour, while New York incurs a loss of about $1.1 million in the same time frame. New York is reportedly losing 115 residents daily, in contrast to Florida’s gain of 551.

Staggeringly, New York’s state budget is more than double that of Florida’s overall budget, and the gap is even wider when comparing municipal budgets. Wilson pointed out, “The push by leaders like Mayor Mamdani to raise taxes on those who remain will only expedite the departure of people from New York.”

Over the past 15 years, Florida has enacted over 50 tax cuts, which have contributed to significant state revenue amid rising residents attracted to its economic environment. According to Wilson, “This is the essence of free enterprise.” He went on to express concern over what he sees as the irrationality of socialist policies: “They sound absurd because they are absurd. The framework of ‘Free Enterprise Florida’ underscores the benefits of lower taxes and minimal government intervention, standing in stark contrast to higher taxes and regulations in New York.”

The campaign is also intended to inspire states across the nation to eschew a drift toward socialism in favor of policies rooted in the foundational principles of America.

Wilson remarked, “New York City’s economy is more robust than ever under Mayor Mamdani. Our goal is to ensure working-class New Yorkers can reap the benefits of this growth,” a sentiment echoed by a statement from City Hall.

As the campaign gains traction, Wilson expressed an ambition to expand the “Free Enterprise Florida” initiative beyond New York City, aiming to educate other regions about the advantages of conservative governance in fostering economic prosperity.

“We started in New York City because the current trajectory is unfavorable for its residents,” he said, adding that cities like Chicago and Minneapolis are also facing similar challenges. Wilson believes there’s an urgent need to promote sound economic policies across the country.

In closing, he stated, “This year marks the 250th anniversary of our nation, celebrating our freedoms and free enterprise. Emphasizing these principles could set us on a path back to economic stability.”
