Highlights from Day 1 of ACC Media Days
The first day of ACC Media Days certainly gave fans and journalists a lot to discuss. From quarterback controversies to conference rankings, every fan base had its share of talking points as we move deeper into the offseason.
Surprisingly, the standout moment came from Mike Norvell, the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles.
Who’s in the Hot Seat for 2026: Shane Beamer or Mike Norvell?
Despite a challenging 7-17 record over the past two seasons, Norvell’s offseason decisions have drawn significant scrutiny. At an event in Charlotte, he found himself in the media spotlight, likely due to the high-profile nature of his position. Many are speculating whether his precarious situation might impact how the team prepares for the upcoming season.
To his credit, Norvell seems to be brushing off the pressure. He noted in an interview that he doesn’t view himself as coaching for his job and expressed confidence in what lies ahead.
“I have great confidence in myself, the people I work with, and the opportunities in front of me,” Norvell said. “Once you meet that, the rest will take care of itself.” Sounds promising, but one might wonder where that confidence originates from.
There’s certainly a winning coach inside Norvell; after all, he boasted a remarkable 23-4 record in 2022 and 2023. However, that feels like ages ago in the current landscape of college football.
On the recruiting front, things haven’t been rosy either, although it might not entirely be a financial issue. High-profile recruits might be wary of joining a team under Norvell’s leadership, which is evident in the numbers: the Seminoles are currently ranked No. 53 with only six four-star recruits for the 2027 class. That’s pretty low for a program of Florida State’s caliber.
Looking ahead, the challenges for Norvell don’t seem to ease, especially as the landscape continues to shift through 2026 and beyond. If he can navigate this tough spot, it could be something of an anomaly in college football.
For now, both Norvell and the athletic department appear stuck. Officials in Tallahassee don’t seem keen on getting involved in any decisions regarding Norvell’s future.
While this is a tough situation, it’s hard not to admire Norvell’s attempt to maintain composure during the ACC Media Days. There’s a lot on the line, and it’s a challenge that would make many coaches uneasy. I’m not entirely sure I buy his confidence, and maybe he doesn’t either. Yet, there’s still an entire season ahead. Perhaps he’ll pull off something unexpected, though I won’t be counting on it.
