Forgive Texas Voters If They Confuse James Talarico’s Gun Record With That of a Progressive from a Blue State

Representative Talarico’s Senate Bid and Second Amendment Stance

Representative James Talarico from Texas is aiming for a Senate seat, but his stance on Second Amendment rights seems more aligned with states like New York or California. Talarico is competing in the Democratic primary against Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who is currently targeting the position held by Republican Sen. John Cornyn. While he claims to defend the Second Amendment and reduce gun violence, his actions tell a different story.

During his tenure in the Texas House, Talarico’s record on gun rights hasn’t been strong, with most anti-Second Amendment legislation failing to advance in the Republican-controlled legislature. He has openly opposed Texas’ “constitutional carry” law and has advocated for measures like “universal background checks” and “red flag” laws.

The political landscape in the Texas House has allowed Talarico to present himself as a moderate, sidestepping more extreme anti-gun proposals like a ban on “assault weapons.” However, the bills he has sponsored or co-authored reflect an anti-Second Amendment perspective.

Talarico did not respond to requests for comment. In 2023, he co-authored two significant bills: one restricted handgun sales and added new regulations for concealed carry permits. Another bill, which gained momentum following the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, proposed raising the age for purchasing certain semi-automatic firearms to 21. Talarico expressed that this legislative process gave him renewed hope.

He has shared personal reflections about parents from Uvalde, who drove miles to the capital advocating for common-sense gun safety. Talarico pointed out that while they cherished the Second Amendment, they recognized the necessity of some regulations to ensure safety for all, including young children.

In 2023, he also contributed to a bill requiring individuals purchasing multiple firearms to fill out a report, although this did not advance in committee. Earlier, he voted against amendments that would have designated Texas as a “constitutional carry” state and supported legislation enhancing regulatory measures around firearms.

Critics have dubbed Talarico a “far-left gun grabber,” insisting he portrays himself as moderate while endorsing policies that undermine Second Amendment rights. The NRA has consistently rated him poorly in terms of gun rights support. Talarico’s views have drawn criticism from pro-gun organizations, asserting that his positions endanger Texans’ rights to self-defense.

The disparity in scores from gun control advocacy groups highlights the contentious debate surrounding Texas’ firearm laws. Talarico’s efforts seem to place him at odds with the prevailing sentiments of many Texas voters regarding gun ownership and rights.
