Former BBC Presenter Charged with Making Indecent Images of Children

LONDON (AP) — A former BBC presenter has been charged with three counts of producing indecent images of children, London’s Metropolitan police say.

Huw Edwards, 62, was one of the BBC’s most high-profile figures until he was suspended in July 2023 and then resigned for health reasons.

Edwards was the main anchor of the BBC’s nightly news and led the BBC’s coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022. He was one of the BBC’s highest-paid stars, earning an annual salary of at least 435,000 pounds ($565,000).

Police said the charges relate to criminal activity that is alleged to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022 and involve images shared on WhatsApp.

Edwards was charged on June 26 with leave from the Crown Prosecution Service and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

“We want to make the media and the public very aware that this is an ongoing case,” police said in a statement. “Anything that could potentially prejudice the upcoming trial should not be made public, including on social media.”
