Anthony Rizzo’s Memorable Moment at Wrigley Field
This time, Anthony Rizzo made it count.
On Saturday, during the Cubs’ 6-2 victory over the Twins, Rizzo, the former first baseman for Chicago, was enjoying the game from the outfield bleachers while cradling his young son. In a surprising twist, he snagged a home run ball hit by Chicago infielder Michael Busch.
The crowd erupted as Rizzo lifted his son into the air, proudly holding the ball aloft after running to catch it. It was a heartwarming scene, to say the least.
In the broadcast booth, the announcers couldn’t believe their eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” exclaimed John Ciambi, clearly taken aback.
Even Busch expressed his disbelief over Rizzo’s catch. “That was just incredible,” he mentioned to reporters. “You never know how things will play out, but I thought it was really something special.”
Interestingly, this catch came about a year after Rizzo had an awkward moment at a game where he mistakenly let a similar home run ball slip through his hands as he tried to catch it while standing in the way of an eager fan.
However, Rizzo’s spirits remained high, and he shared in the joy alongside the fans around him.
Rizzo was in Chicago to mark the Cubs’ 10-year anniversary of their 2016 World Series win. Before Friday’s game, he threw out the ceremonial first pitch, celebrating the unveiling of the logo for the 2027 All-Star Game at Wrigley Field.
Busch reflected on the impact of the 2016 team, saying, “What they did for this city and the championship they brought—incredible.” It was evident how beloved that team was and how much joy they brought to the community. “Rizzo was really the heart of it all,” he added.
