Former Democratic Manchin attributes Trump's comeback to Biden's border issues.

Manchin Critiques Democratic Border Policies

Former Senator Joe Manchin, who was previously a Democrat from West Virginia, took a critical stance against Democratic leadership during a recent interview. He suggested that the way the U.S. has handled border issues could potentially enable a re-election for President Donald Trump.

In a candid conversation with Terry Moran at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Manchin expressed discontent with both parties but mainly pointed fingers at the Biden administration for the current border crisis. When pressed about Trump’s administration, he offered a direct but layered response.

“The border,” he said when asked about what might allow Trump to regain support.

Moran inquired about the effectiveness of Trump’s methods, to which Manchin replied with a firm “No.” He thought it was vital to protect the borders, adding that Democrats have struggled to acknowledge mistakes. “I warned them against granting asylum at the border; we never did that before,” he noted.

Manchin argued that mismanagement over border issues has provided Trump with opportunities to pursue controversial actions. When asking if this pointed to a failure of Joe Biden’s leadership, Manchin confirmed, stating, “This is a failure of the Democratic Party led by Joe Biden.”

Additionally, he discussed Trump’s tough-on-crime posture and how he would address governors resisting federal support, possibly indicating a more open collaboration if facing resource issues.

“If I had been in a challenging situation with high crime and inadequate resources, I’d have welcomed federal assistance,” Manchin explained, referencing Trump’s deployment of the National Guard. When Moran interjected with a reminder that the federal government might not respond this way, Manchin reiterated his stance, saying that he would accept help with no resistance.

Attempts to reach out for comments from Biden’s office for further clarification went unanswered.
