Former New York Official Charged with Spying for China Claimed Hochul Was “More Compliant” Than Cuomo: Trial

A former New York state official, accused of acting as a spy for China, reportedly remarked that Governor Cathy Hochul was “much more compliant” than her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo.

The New York Post revealed these comments from Linda Sun, who convinced Hochul, then Cuomo’s deputy, to record a Lunar New Year video for the Chinese consulate in New York, based on evidence from Sun’s corruption trial.

“She is much more obedient than the governor,” Sun communicated to a consular official, as shown in messages presented during a trial in Brooklyn federal court.

Sun also sent a message shortly after, stating that “the lieutenant governor listens to me better than the governor.” Prosecutors indicated that Chinese officials initially wanted Cuomo for the video, but Sun suggested involving Hochul instead.

The two-minute video featured Hochul wishing a happy new year and discussing the “privilege” of collaborating with the Chinese American community. FOX News Digital has attempted to reach Hochul’s office for comments.

Sun, who also worked for Hochul, faces charges for violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and conspiracy to launder money.

According to prosecutors, Sun acted on behalf of the Chinese government in various situations, including arranging high-level visits to China and obstructing meetings between U.S. officials and Taiwanese representatives.

She was removed from her position in 2023 after “evidence of misconduct” surfaced. Sun is accused of providing favors to Chinese officials in exchange for millions of dollars funneled to her husband, Chris Hu, who operated a business in China.

Both are believed to have used these funds to purchase a 2024 Ferrari Roma sports car alongside over $6 million in properties in locations like Long Island and Honolulu.

In one communication, it’s alleged that Sun claimed he could stop Cuomo from discussing the abuses faced by the Uyghur population in China, who are subjected to severe oppression.

During a conversation with another official, Sun noted a speechwriter’s insistence on mentioning the Uyghurs, to which the official replied about the speechwriter’s lack of knowledge about China.

Sun remarked on the absence of previous experience in China and suggested they avoid bringing the topic up with the governor. Sun’s legal team argued that her connections with Chinese officials were legitimate and not unethical.

“Linda Sun did what she was hired to do. She did not commit a crime by doing her job,” stated her defense attorney at the trial.
