Former NFL Player Chris Payton-Jones Dies at 30 Following Unfortunate Car Accident

Chris Payton Jones, a former cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals, tragically passed away in a car accident in Florida on Saturday at just 30 years old.

Reports indicate that Peyton Jones was involved in a collision with a pickup truck in Alachua County, Florida, and succumbed to his injuries afterward. The driver and passenger of the truck sustained only minor injuries, making them the sole survivors of the incident.

The Jacksonville, Florida native initially joined the NFL as part of the Lions’ practice squad in 2018. By the next season, he was signed by the Cardinals. He secured a starting position in 2020 and played for the Lions, Titans, and Raiders over the next few years, finally retiring from the NFL in 2022 before later participating in the UFL and XFL.

While his on-field accomplishments may not have been extensive, he seems to have made a positive impression among players and coaches alike and was recognized for his contributions to the team atmosphere.

Adam Geis, Jones’ high school coach at Sandalwood, commended him as a dedicated player with a strong work ethic.

“He was truly one of my all-time favorites! This kid never missed a workout or practice; he just loved being on the field. Everyone adored him,” Geiss shared.

“His positivity was infectious. I honestly never heard him say anything bad about anyone or anything. Just being around him was uplifting. It was always a joy to see him,” added Geis.

Pat Clark, a coach at Central State, echoed similar sentiments about Jones.

“Chris was the hardest worker I’ve ever known. He was a great player, but even a better person. Sure, he wasn’t the biggest or the fastest, but he understood how to do things right, and the game acknowledged that,” Clark noted.

“In the end, I believe he would have made the most significant impact off the field as he was transitioning to a career in media and mentoring young athletes. Chris was a huge inspiration in my own coaching journey, embodying everything I aim for in a student-athlete,” Clark added.

Friends and acquaintances also remarked on Peyton Jones’s commitment to community service.

“Having trained and worked with him, I’ve never met a more sincere person with such a heartfelt connection to the kids in this community. He was a positive role model, not by choice, but through his actions,” said former Florida State fullback James Coleman.
