Former Senate Democrat: Trump’s choice to skip Israel on his Middle East trip conveys a strong message

Ex-Senate Democrat: Trump avoiding Israel on Middle East trip sends 'hell of a message'

Trump’s Middle East Visit and Implications on Israel

The former senator from Montana commented on President Trump’s recent Middle East journey, describing it as overwhelming. He noted that Trump’s choice to skip a visit to Israel would convey a significant message regarding his take on the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Trump arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia late Monday to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on investment discussions. His itinerary also includes stops in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“By not visiting Israel on this trip, he will definitely send a strong message,” the senator stated during his appearance on MSNBC. “If Israel doesn’t grasp this message, then they’re not paying attention,” he added. “This is about everyone around Trump—there’s a clear expectation to foster positive relations in the Middle East, and there have certainly been numerous issues in recent years.”

These remarks emerged as Israeli forces persisted in their attacks on civilians in the West Bank, while humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, faced blockages.

Trump and other officials have been urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider a ceasefire, but have recently shifted focus towards the recovery of American hostages.

On Monday, Edan Alexander, the last American hostage held by Hamas, was released, coinciding with Israeli military strikes on a shelter in Gaza that tragically resulted in the deaths of about 16 individuals, mostly women and children.

Netanyahu had previously asserted that his mission remains the eradication of Hamas. The conflict, which ignited on October 7, 2023, followed assaults from extremist groups, claiming around 1,200 Israeli lives and leading to the capture of over 250 individuals.

Local health officials indicate that over 52,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the onset of strikes that day, with the figures not differentiating between combatants and non-combatants.

“We aim to bring all hostages home. So far, we have secured 147, out of a total of 196, with efforts ongoing,” the prime minister stated at an Independence Day gathering in Jerusalem. “That remains a crucial objective,” he emphasized, adding that the primary aim of warfare is ultimately victory over enemies.

Netanyahu’s comments echo sentiments shared by far-right members of his coalition. “We must face reality: retrieving hostages isn’t the sole priority, although it is extremely significant,” remarked Bezarel Smotrich, the finance minister, last week as reported by CNN. “To dismantle Hamas completely and ensure nothing like the events of October 7 occurs again, we must recognize that Hamas operates from Gaza, and the situation won’t simply change.”
