Bowen Yang, a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, along with his podcast co-host Matt Rogers, has faced backlash for their earlier comments questioning Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-Texas) candidacy for the U.S. Senate. They seemed to walk back their criticism after receiving a response online.
In an Instagram post, Rogers said, “I promise to take this feedback seriously.” He emphasized the importance of being transparent and candid, particularly on their podcast. “I really care about winning elections, but I wasn’t precise in my wording. I’ll be more thoughtful moving forward.” He expressed his admiration for Crockett while regretting the implication that he didn’t support her. “I just want us to win and will find a better way to contribute,” he added.
Yang echoed Rogers’ sentiments and admitted, “I shouldn’t have brushed this off. I need to be more responsible with my platform.” He acknowledged the significance of their words and the impact they could have.
During a recent episode of their podcast, “Las Culturistas,” the duo criticized Crockett’s campaign after Rogers initially targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom for being self-serving. He then included Crockett, suggesting that donations to her campaign were wasted funds. “We’re past the point where politicians are blatantly discussing their motivations. Don’t waste your money on Jasmine Crockett,” he stated, to which Yang responded, “I have to agree.” The duo continued to express disbelief at the idea of Crockett winning, referencing other candidates who had fallen short in Texas.
Crockett, who announced her candidacy against state Rep. James Talarico for the Texas Senate seat, responded to criticism by stating that she was politically capable. Waltzing through their concerns, she maintained that skepticism about her candidacy is unwarranted.
Many Democrats have raised doubts too, hinting that while she might secure the primary, her chances in the general election may be slim. “She might win the primary, but I doubt she can take the general,” remarked one senior party member. Another added, “I think this is a questionable decision given the dynamics of swing districts.” Though some see potential, others remain cautious about Crockett’s broader appeal in Texas.
