Vehicle Crashes into Grocery Store in Truckee, California

TRUCKEE, Calif. – A vehicle crashed into the entrance of a grocery store in a picturesque mountain town in California on Saturday, injuring a pedestrian, according to local police.

Four individuals, including children, sustained injuries when a 49-year-old man drove his car into the front of a Safeway store in Truckee. Thankfully, their injuries aren’t deemed life-threatening.

Authorities suspect that the driver, hailing from Coalinga in the San Joaquin Valley, deliberately targeted pedestrians and the establishment.

Scotty Mathewson, a 39-year-old who was shopping with his wife at the time, recalled hearing a loud crash followed by frantic screams. While his wife called for emergency services, Mathewson did his best to assist others, ensuring that no one was trapped under debris or the vehicle. He mentioned that a youth baseball team was conducting a fundraiser outside the store and that parents were anxiously searching for their kids during the chaos.

“It’s different when you see things on the news or YouTube; they always seem removed,” he said. “This really hit home for me.”

Mathewson observed that bystanders were shouting at the driver and attempting to open the locked doors, but he remained calm and stayed inside until the police arrived minutes later.

The driver is now facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, felony damage to property, and a probation violation. He is currently being held at a detention facility in Nevada City, approximately an hour from Truckee.

As of Saturday evening, there were no public details available regarding an attorney for the driver.

Truckee, a charming town with about 17,000 residents, is renowned for its stunning winter landscapes and proximity to attractions like Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake. February usually witnesses an influx of visitors drawn to winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.
