Newsom Criticizes Trump’s Environmental Deregulation

California Governor Gavin Newsom has claimed that the extensive environmental deregulation under the Trump administration could spell disaster for the U.S. auto industry. He criticized these rollbacks, which he argues save California drivers approximately $2,400, while he simultaneously seeks to highlight his administration’s role in fostering innovation in manufacturing.

During his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Newsom accused President Trump of “doubling down on stupidity” by reversing significant climate change policies put in place during the Obama administration, aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions.

“Mr. Trump is attempting to turn back the clock,” he stated to a gathering of European policymakers, earning some applause from the audience.

The 2009 “crisis certification” determined that greenhouse gas emissions pose health risks, enabling the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide from vehicles and power plants.

According to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, the changes enacted would reduce vehicle costs by about $2,400.

“I think what Mr. Trump has done is essentially give American automakers a death sentence,” Newsom remarked.

He argued that thanks to climate-related regulations, the U.S. auto industry could compete with China’s electric vehicle market effectively.

“California’s regulations have driven innovation in manufacturing,” Newsom noted with pride.

This trip to Munich marks Newsom’s second international voyage since his visit to Davos in January, where he criticized European leaders for yielding to Trump’s demands.

During the climate change debate, Newsom pointed out the “temporary nature of this administration.” He expressed confidence about California’s role, stating, “Donald Trump won’t be around much longer. California remains a dependable partner in these efforts.”

The White House responded sharply, with press secretary Anna Kelly labeling Newsom’s trip a “vanity project.” She suggested he should focus on the issues facing California instead of seeking approval from global elites. “It’s disgusting how he enjoys the ritual of humiliation,” Kelly added.

Some Republicans condemned Newsom’s remarks as a blatant appeal to European elites. Gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton criticized Newsom, accusing him of exacerbating challenges for Californians already burdened by high costs for gas, electricity, and vehicle registration due to his climate policies.

“Now, Newsom opposes President Trump’s plan aimed at reducing car prices by $2,400, which involves cutting unnecessary climate bureaucracy,” Hilton commented.
