Governor Gavin Newsom faced criticism after he applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Some opponents suggested he should remain silent on the topic.
“Tariffs essentially function as an illegal cash grab that will raise prices, negatively impact working families, and jeopardize longstanding international partnerships,” Newsom expressed on X on Friday.
The Supreme Court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by imposing stringent tariffs on key trading partners like China and Mexico under the guise of emergency powers.
“It’s time to pay the piper, Donald,” Newsom continued, insisting that every dollar his administration wrongfully obtained should be refunded with interest.
However, this tough stance didn’t resonate well with some critics. They mocked him, pointing out California’s high taxes and substantial government spending. Kevin Dalton, a former candidate for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, criticized Newsom for not repaying $20 billion in federal loans meant for COVID-19 unemployment aid, leaving small businesses in a tough spot.
“If Newsom were wise, he would remain quiet and settle the debt. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem particularly smart,” Dalton remarked on X.
Another critic urged Newsom to consider reimbursing California taxpayers for the billions spent on the high-speed rail project, which still has no operational trains, before seeking refunds from the federal government.
A further response questioned Newsom’s commentary on legendary director Steven Spielberg’s choice to leave California.
This backlash followed Newsom’s signing of a bill that allows for a $590 million loan to improve San Francisco’s failing transportation system.
