California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) visited the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday to help pay for customs duties and deport millions of illegal aliens who have no legal right to be in the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump He reiterated the points raised by large companies, such as his plans for
In recent weeks, President Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico for refusing to participate in the multibillion-dollar illegal drug and human body smuggling business run by drug cartels on its southern border.
“These tariffs will remain in effect until we stop the invasion of our country by drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social last month.
Newsom reiterates key business points torn apart From the page of wall street journalargued that such tariffs would increase inflation, eliminate American jobs, cause food shortages, and crush small businesses.
“[These tariffs] For example…you would have to spend an additional $3,000 or more to buy a car from Mexico,” Newsom argued, repeatedly calling such tariffs a “25% tax increase.”
Similarly, Newsom denounced President Trump's plan to carry out the largest mass deportation program in American history, arguing that such a plan would cause food prices to soar and housing costs to rise.
“If you look at farmworkers, about half are undocumented,” Newsom said. “Nearly 90 percent have lived in this state for years and years and years…The impact that mass deportations have on the food costs of this state and this country is enormous. This is serious business.”
“[In the] The construction industry… estimates that 13% are illegal immigrants… [this] It will affect housing costs,” he argued.
Just a few days ago wall street journal published an article highlighting the construction industry's opposition to mass deportations and tariffs. One construction site manager argued that these deportations would “definitely” cause a labor shortage, even though wage data showed otherwise.
Like Newsom, construction industry executives argue that eliminating illegal immigrants would make it easier for Americans to afford housing, even though studies in the U.S. and around the world show that mass immigration is a contributing factor to soaring home prices. They claim that costs will increase.
