Gayle King Surprised That the Juror Who Didn't Agree in the Clancy Trial Was a Black Man

Jury Deliberation Sparks Controversy

On Friday morning, the news emerged that the lone juror holding out in the Lindsay Clancy case was a black man, which stood out amidst an otherwise all-white jury. This revelation sparked further discussion, particularly after Gayle King’s response during an interview on CBS Mornings.

King spoke with juror Paula Devlin, inquiring about the jury’s composition. The deliberations lasted nearly 40 hours before resulting in a mistrial, largely because this one juror maintained his stance against a guilty verdict.

This juror was reportedly inclined to convict Clancy for the first-degree murder of her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan.

During the interview, a clip shared online by Curtis Houck, managing editor of Media Research Center and News Busters, captures King asking about the jurors’ demographics: “What was the age range, what was the racial makeup? I haven’t heard any of that. What was it?”

Devlin explained, “Um, 70-ish to 22. One person of color, and then everybody else was white. A lot of the jurors had children.”

King followed up, asking if the person of color was a man or a woman. Devlin confirmed, “A man.” King then paused, appearing intrigued, and asked, “Is the holdout juror a person of— a black man?”

Devlin affirmed, and King seemed momentarily taken aback, stating, “Whoa. I have to sit with that for just a second.”

King’s reaction drew criticism from conservative commentators on social media.

Eric Daugherty from Florida Voice remarked humorously, “CBS is utterly SHOCKED when a Lindsay Clancy juror reveals the lone male holdout that refused to cave was a black male.” He questioned King’s need to “sit with that,” suggesting it hinted at her preconceived notions regarding race.

Responses varied, with some applauding the juror for standing firm against views that Clancy was guilty of murder, while others highlighted the defense’s argument regarding her mental health due to postpartum psychosis and conflicting medications.

One user praised the juror, posting “Black excellence,” alongside a drawing of a bearded black man. Another user claimed, “The 11 unhinged leftwing jurors tried to bully the one holdout… He’s a modern-day Rosa Parks… He deserves a medal.”

The case itself has created a significant divide among public opinion in the U.S., with many asserting that Clancy deserved conviction while others argued her mental health situation needed consideration.

Clancy, accused of strangling her children with exercise bands to avoid leaving them motherless, also attempted suicide, resulting in her becoming paraplegic after jumping from a second-story window.

After jurors could not reach a consensus, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial last week. Now, the prosecution must decide whether to retry the case, with the next hearing set for September 29.
