Gaza City labeled a 'dangerous combat zone'; remains of 2 hostages found

Israeli Defense Forces Declare Gaza City a “Combat Zone”

On Friday, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) announced that Gaza City has been designated as a “dangerous combat zone.” This decision follows a rise in attacks in the area.

The IDF indicated that a previously established pause in combat, which had allowed for the distribution of humanitarian aid in certain parts of Gaza, would no longer be applicable to Gaza City.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that the remains of 251 individuals, who were part of an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, have been recovered from Gaza City. Additionally, he mentioned that the ruins of a second hostage have been identified by forensic experts.

While the IDF continues “offensive operations against terrorist groups in Gaza to safeguard Israeli civilians,” it stated that humanitarian assistance would still be promoted across most of the Gaza Strip, apart from Gaza City.

The IDF also made a renewed call for civilians in Gaza to evacuate southward.

On the same day, reports emerged that IDF soldiers operating in the Zeitoun district of Gaza City had uncovered “a group of terrorists sheltered within military compounds, located about 100 meters away.” Israeli forces subsequently contacted Air Force aircraft, leading to air strikes on the buildings that aimed to eliminate the terrorists.

This ongoing conflict began when Hamas militants launched a significant attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the kidnapping of 251 individuals. Israel claims that 48 hostages are currently being held, with estimates suggesting that between 20 and 22 of them may still be alive.

Although Israel asserts that it is aiming to minimize civilian casualties, Hamas has accused it of deploying fighter jets in populated areas, such as residences, schools, mosques, and hospitals, for protection.
