Forget about love at first sight; for Gen Z, it’s more about the first glance at a bank statement.

The romantic landscape in 2025 doesn’t resemble a classic rom-com; instead, it appears more like a business merger. For Gen Z, relationships resemble the merger of companies where assets are carefully evaluated, not merely romance.

“Financial considerations are becoming crucial in marriage,” stated Dr. Eliza Philby, a generational researcher. She emphasizes that young individuals are approaching relationships with a keen eye on financial stability.

Philby, who authored “Inherited Property: It’s Time to Talk About Mom and Dad’s Banks,” notes that relationships can be viewed as a fusion of family finances. It’s not just about affection—it’s about economic strategy.

She quips that Netflix-and-chill has been replaced with credit check-and-chill.

These young lovers aren’t just looking for chemistry. In today’s economic climate, a family’s wealth can act as a powerful attraction.

“The realities of life prospects and opportunities are increasingly determined by access to family wealth rather than personal achievements,” she explained to the media.

This isn’t a trivial trend.

The so-called “parent banks” are now significant players in the U.S. economy, transferring trillions through gifts and inheritance.

A study in 2018 revealed that “parent banks” ranked as the seventh-largest mortgage lender in the U.S.

“Typically, young people can’t achieve independence, get married, or start families without parental support,” Philby remarked.

Consequently, it’s not surprising that financially-minded Gen Z Daters are considering a partner’s financial situation along with romantic attributes.

Amber Brooks, editor-in-chief of a dating advice site, has pointed out that younger generations aren’t hesitant to factor in finances when choosing partners.

“We’re seeing a trend where young people evaluate potential partners based on careers and lifestyles that could shape their futures,” Brooks said. “Their approach is strategic, not superficial.”

So, rather than the traditional meet-cute in a coffee shop, Gen Z wants to know about your retirement savings before discussing your favorite hobbies.

This contrasts sharply with the era of idealistic love stories and fairytale romances.

Today’s Gen Z Daters seem to prefer power partnerships rather than just fleeting puppy love.

In this evolving landscape, if your family wealth isn’t substantial, you might find both financial and romantic connections fading away.

“The belief that education and hard work inevitably lead to success is changing,” she noted.

It appears Gen Z is not just searching for “The One”; they’re also looking for someone with a trust fund.
