George Strait and Neil Diamond Rise on Billboard Charts with Classic Greatest Hits Albums

George Strait and Neil Diamond’s Enduring Hits

George Strait and Neil Diamond demonstrate how a musician’s most iconic songs and albums can resonate across generations.

This month, Strait’s compilation album “50 Number Ones,” originally released in 2004, climbed to No. 74 on the Billboard 200, up from No. 84 the previous week during the July 4th festivities. Meanwhile, Diamond quietly made a comeback with his 2014 collection “All Time Greatest Hits,” which landed at No. 171.

Strait’s impact on the charts is notably stronger. Parade reports that “50 Number Ones” racked up an impressive 390 weeks on the Billboard 200, after debuting at the top spot in October 2004. This collection features 50 of his greatest hits, including “Fool Hearted Memory.” Officially, Strait is recognized as the country artist with the most No. 1 hits, and his compilation has achieved multi-platinum status seven times, as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The recent rise in his album’s rankings marks a significant achievement. In September, “50 Number Ones” had already surpassed 350 weeks on the Billboard 200, becoming the first of his albums to do so, thanks to consistent streaming and sales. At that point, fans were buying around 11,300 equivalent units weekly.

As for Diamond, his collection boasts a unique longevity. The 23-track album debuted at No. 15, maintaining a presence on the Billboard 200 for 56 weeks since its release, with “Cracklin’ Rosie,” a 1970 single, serving as its lead track and marking his first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2011, Diamond was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. However, he faced challenges when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that same year, leading him to step back from touring. Even so, his music continued to thrive, with “Sweet Caroline” becoming a beloved anthem at Boston Red Sox games and beyond.
