Georgia police fatally shoot man waving machine gun around near gas station

A Georgia man was shot and killed by police on Sunday after he was seen brandishing a gun near an Athens gas station, authorities said.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Athens-Clarke County Police responded around 1:20 a.m. Sunday to a report of a man brandishing a “machine gun” near the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road.

Upon arriving on scene, officers found the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Marquius Sims, at the Verizon store before crossing the road into the parking lot of a QuikTrip gas station.

Sims was pursued by officers and instructed to drop the gun, but at one point during the short pursuit, Sims fired his weapon at the pursuing officers, causing two officers to return fire, shooting the suspect multiple times.

Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting on the Vanderbilt University campus on Saturday.

The suspect received emergency medical assistance from officers at the scene until paramedics arrived.

Sims was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No police officers were injured in the incident.

Athens-Clarke County Police have requested the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

The Texas suspect was caught on video committing violent acts, including stabbing and confronting people.

The two officers involved in Sunday’s shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a GBI investigation into the incident.

Sims’ body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia for an autopsy.

Once the investigation is concluded, it will be turned over to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review.
