Georgia’s Tax Refunds on the Horizon
Atlanta – Are you still waiting for your Georgia tax refund? Well, it might be arriving soon.
The Georgia Department of Revenue has indicated that checks are being issued daily in batches.
In April, Governor Brian Kemp approved House Bill 112, which provides for a special state income tax refund totaling $1 billion.
This one-time rebate is available to eligible taxpayers who meet specific conditions and will be processed after the state’s review in 2024.
The rebate amounts are structured as follows:
- $250 for individuals filing separately, whether single or married
- $375 for heads of household
- $500 for couples filing jointly
If you pay state taxes or receive your refund via direct deposit, the amount will go directly into your bank account. For those who use the mail, a paper check will be sent.
It’s worth noting that, under Georgia law, these rebates are not taxed as income. However, if the recipient has outstanding debts owed to the state, the refund may be adjusted accordingly. No interest will accrue on the refund amount.
This marks the third time in recent years that Georgia has issued special tax refunds, following similar payouts in 2022 and 2023.
Officials commented that the number of refunds being issued has increased recently, with the state’s gradual rollout helping the Department of Revenue monitor the process effectively.
Eligibility for the Georgia Tax Rebate
To qualify for a rebate, taxpayers must:
- File both Georgia income tax returns for 2023 and 2024
- Not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s 2023 return
- Be a full-time tax resident of Georgia
If you’ve filed your taxes by the May 1 deadline, the state expects that refunds will be issued in the coming weeks.
You can check the status of your surplus tax refund by visiting the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website. Be sure to include your Social Security number or individual taxpayer ID and your federally adjusted gross income from your Georgia tax return. The information is updated nightly.
Keep in mind that refunds may take some time to process. The authorities suggest allowing six to eight weeks for those who filed by May 1, 2025, to receive their money.
