Giving Details on Her Border Wall Stance ‘Putting the Cart Before the Horse’ ‘Have to’ Get Her Elected

On Thursday's episode of NewsNation's “The Hill,” Quentin Fulks, chief deputy campaign manager for the Harris-Waltz campaign, responded to a question about whether 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris would support building a border wall given that she has previously denounced it as un-American, saying he supports the Senate bill that includes funding for the wall, but said, “The vice president is going to make sure that we put the American people first in our policy when it comes to the border and the border wall. And I think that, obviously, that's going to require working with Congress, congressional leadership.” He also said that asking if he would support more funding after the Senate bill's funding dries up is “putting the cart before the horse. We've got to have a vice president elected. That's our focus.”

Host Blake Berman asked, “There was a bipartisan bill in the Senate that was negotiated by Democrats and Republicans and the White House, which we all know Donald Trump ultimately killed, but it at least had a big impact. Kamala Harris has said she supports it. Part of that bill includes funding for a border wall, which is already law, right? So the money is being spent. It's being mandated. But when that money runs out, does the vice president believe we should build more border wall, or is her position… still the same as when she said in 2018 that a border wall is 'un-American'?”

Fulks responded, “I think the vice president has a very humane approach to the border, which is a stark contrast to Donald Trump. I think the border wall piece was in this bill because it was necessary to get a bipartisan agreement, both Republicans and Democrats, to form a consensus. As you mentioned, Donald Trump tore up that consensus. So I think the vice president is very committed to sending more Border Patrol agents and not separating children from their mothers and parents at the border, which is Donald Trump's policy. So I think the vice president will support this bill, because it's the strongest, most bipartisan border bill this country could have, and the fact that it's not going to happen is a big deal.” [of] “Donald Trump”

Berman continued: “So what about the possibility of building more wall, or do you still think going beyond that would be 'un-American'?”

Fulks responded: “I think the vice president is going to make sure that he puts the American people first in his policies when it comes to the border and the border wall. And, obviously, he's going to have to work with congressional leadership. And I can say, the vice president really cares about border security. So, I think she's going to work with Congress, and those conversations are going to happen when the bill is being negotiated with Congress. But, as you said, the current bill does include funding for a border wall. So, I think she said she would support that bill. But, [the] “If that bill runs out of funding, she'll have to work with Congress to decide whether to renew it or not, depending on how it goes, but I think that's putting the cart before the horse. We've got to elect a vice president. That's our focus.”
