Concerns About Freedom of Speech in the UK
In the UK, worries about freedom of speech are mounting as new laws related to speech, public protest, and criticism of religion seem poised to alter civil liberties. Activist Tommy Robinson, who has found himself often at odds with these laws, is determined to respond.
Robinson asserts, “Their problem is always that I always tell the facts.” In an appearance with Blaze Media co-founder, he shared his perspective on the “Glenn Beck Program.”
Despite being frequently accused of “incitement to hatred,” Robinson insists he simply speaks the truth. He argues that the current legislative efforts aim to suppress public knowledge of facts regarding Islam, saying, “They want to limit what can be said,” referring to the intent behind the new legislation.
Robinson is undeterred. He states, “This law doesn’t change anything I say.” He believes that as long as he is truthful, he will continue to speak freely. “If it results in prosecution, then, well, that’s just how it is,” he tells Glenn.
He adds that many of these laws cultivate fear, highlighting the Labor government’s plans to abolish the jury system. When asked what that entails, Robinson explains, “In the UK, a case can go to court, but if the charges are minor, there won’t be a jury.” He clarifies that this could lead to shorter sentences, as the system may only allow for a judge’s ruling rather than a jury’s input.
Recalling his own experiences, Robinson mentions his last prison sentence of 18 months, which stemmed from his film “Silence.” He confidently states that the film was purely factual: “No one disputed the facts I presented.” Yet, he faced consequences merely for making it public. “Had I been able to let a jury decide, I wouldn’t have gone to jail,” he reflects.
