Fishback Urges Clarity on U.S. Commitment to Iran
On Wednesday, during remarks outside the Capitol, Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback urged President Donald Trump to clearly articulate the United States’ stance regarding the conflict with Iran.
Fishback, who is vying for the Republican nomination for governor in Florida, criticized the Trump administration for failing to present a compelling case for war, suggesting that U.S. objectives in Iran are unclear. “The goalposts have already moved in the wrong direction many times,” he remarked.
His comments come at a time when more voices on the right are expressing concern over the situation. Notably, former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent resigned recently, stating he could not support the ongoing military engagement in Iran. “This seems like the beginning of a forever war,” Fishback added.
Fishback labeled the conflict as “reckless,” framing the issue as one of good versus evil. He challenged Trump directly, asking him to return to the Capitol and deliver a joint address to Congress. He wants clarity on the reasons for the war, including the intelligence and goals associated with it. “What does victory look like?” he questioned.
He expressed that if there was substantial evidence of an imminent threat from Iran to the United States, he and many others might reconsider their opposition. “I would be willing to change my mind if there was actual evidence suggesting that Iran was imminently attempting to attack the United States and kill American citizens,” he said, indicating that many Americans share this sentiment.
When asked about his earlier stance against deploying the Florida National Guard without Congressional approval, Fishback affirmed he maintains that position. “My hope is that by the time I take the oath of office next January, this war will be over,” he noted.
His campaign livestreamed the event across platforms like X and Instagram. Fishback began his campaign in November 2025, seeking to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. At just 31 years old and with no prior political experience, Fishback aims his message at young conservatives.
Despite his approach, he has faced criticism from within the party over various controversial campaign positions, including a proposed “sin tax” targeting OnlyFans content creators. Fishback has also announced a property tax exemption for homes valued under $2 million, stating, “If your home is under $2 million, you don’t pay any property taxes.”
