Georgia’s Republican governor, Brian Kemp, signed a bill Wednesday that gives the commission the power to begin firing and punishing state prosecutors. This could easily thwart Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ efforts to prosecute former President Trump.

“This bill will help ensure that corrupt and incompetent prosecutors are held accountable when they refuse to abide by the law,” Kemp said before signing the bill.
Kemp first signed the bill last May, which specifically created the Prosecuting Attorney Qualifications Commission, which has the power to punish and fire “far-left prosecutors” who “undermine the safety” of communities to advocate for DEI initiatives. Established. .
Rules guiding the commission’s actions were struck down in November by the state Supreme Court, which found there were “serious questions” about the district attorney’s ability to oversee the activities of the district attorney outside of the practice of law. A resolution approved by the state Legislature in January would eliminate the need for Supreme Court permission.
The law would force the Solicitor General and district attorneys to evaluate each case individually, rather than refusing to prosecute certain categories of crimes. But Democrats argue that by creating a commission without a separate body to oversee its actions, Republicans are “trying to subvert the will of the people” and opening the door to “abuse.” There is.
Judge Scott McAfee ruled Friday that either Willis or prosecutor Nathan Wade, with whom he had a sexual relationship, must resign before the case against Trump and his associates for election interference can proceed.
McAfee said there was a clear conflict of interest in the racketeering case between Willis and Special Counsel Wade because of their romantic past.
