Better late than never, the Giants are looking to acquire a replacement for Graham Gano.
Coach Brian Daboll said Monday that Gano will miss “several weeks” with a hamstring injury.
It's unclear whether the Giants will place the 37-year-old kicker on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four weeks, or keep him available in case he recovers quickly.
The Giants are scheduled to hold workouts for their free agent kickers this week. The three kickers they had last season when Gano was on injured reserve with a knee injury — Cade York, Randy Bullock and Mason Crosby — are available to work out.
Another option would be to promote rookie Jude McAtamney from the practice squad.
The Giants opted not to use McAtamney as insurance for Sunday's game after Gano was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.
It ended badly when Gano hurt his hamstring on the first play of the game and punter Jamie Gillan couldn't kick a field goal or the final two PATs after the first one was missed, costing the Commanders about six points in a 21-18 loss.
Daboll called the hamstring injury a misfortune, but Dr. David Chao of Sports Injury Central, who served as the Chargers' physician for 17 years, told The Washington Post that the injury “leads to other injuries.”
Gano appeared to struggle in pregame warmups, even interrupting his usual routine to bandage his groin, and may have injured his right hamstring while trying to compensate by running after returner Austin Ekeler while nursing a right groin injury.
“I was flying,” Gano joked after the game. “I've never had a hamstring injury, so I can't guarantee anything on that front. [overcompensating]”It's frustrating, but I'm going to do everything I can to get it back. I feel like I'm hitting the ball well.”
