Grand jury considers charging James Comey with lying as the deadline for prosecution approaches

Reports suggest that the Justice Department is contemplating criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey for allegedly making false statements to Congress.

Comey’s potential legal issues revolve around whether he misled Congress during testimony regarding the investigation into the 2016 Trump-Russia conspiracy, which took place on September 30, 2020. It was noted in a report.

The statute of limitations for perjury is five years, so federal prosecutors have until next Tuesday to move forward with any charges against Comey.

The case is being managed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office located in Virginia’s Eastern District.

A source indicated to reports that there is a significant ruling pending concerning issues in Virginia, and a decision could be forthcoming at any moment.

The specific charges Comey may face and the elements of his testimony that are under examination remain unclear.

Recently, President Trump confirmed that he had “dismissed” Eric Siebert, the top prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, citing unusually strong backing from a Democrat senator.

Siebert, who claimed to have resigned, reportedly faced pressure from the Trump administration to initiate charges concerning mortgage fraud allegations involving New York Attorney General Letitia James.

In the wake of Siebert’s departure, Trump nominated White House aide Lindsay Harrigan to take over the position, though she has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.

Comey, now 64, was dismissed by Trump in 2017 during his initial presidential term.

The former FBI director, who has become a vocal critic of Trump, initiated an investigation into accusations of conspiracy between the Russian government and Trump’s campaign back in July 2016, dubbed “Crossfire Hurricane.”

Trump has consistently derided this investigation, labeling it a “witch hunt” and a “hoax,” even though he was not charged with any crimes linked to it.

On Saturday, in a social media post addressing Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump expressed frustration over the delay in the DOJ’s decision to charge Comey and other political adversaries.

“Pam: I’ve reviewed over 30 statements and posts, and it feels like the same old story—no action, no results,” he remarked. “What about Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff and Letitia?”

He added, “This delay is harming our reputation. They seem to be doing nothing while I was charged five times!”

Later, Trump clarified to reporters that he wasn’t upset with Bondi but wanted the DOJ to take action.

“I want them to act. It’s urgent. They were relentless, and it’s time for decisive action, especially considering I was charged,” he noted, speaking about the earlier social media post.

“We need urgency. If they’re innocent, that’s fine. If they’re guilty, they need to face consequences. And we need to do this now.”
