Gregg Jarrett Discusses the Reasons President Can Activate the National Guard to Ensure Citizen Safety

National Guard Deployment Discussion

Gregg Jarrett, a legal analyst at Fox News, expressed on Fox Business that governors do have the ability to deploy the National Guard if necessary. Recently, President Donald Trump mentioned plans to focus on Chicago for a National Guard deployment following an emergency crime order earlier in Washington, D.C. He hinted that New York City could also be included in future efforts. On the show “Kudlow,” Jarrett noted that this kind of action isn’t unprecedented.

“Eisenhower did it as well. Yes, when federal law enforcement faces obstruction, the president can call in the National Guard to protect citizens from imminent harm,” he stated. Jarrett emphasized that the president retains the right to deploy the National Guard even if there’s opposition from governors.

“Certainly, the president can mobilize the National Guard and inform the governor. If the governor doesn’t comply, the president can still proceed,” he clarified.

Under Trump’s administration, the management of the metropolitan police in Washington, D.C. is under his control. Data shows that the city has one of the highest murder rates in the country. The administration is looking to do away with certain progressive measures surrounding bail and governance that are complicating law enforcement efforts in the area.

Recently, robbery rates have dropped by 42%, and carjackings have seen an 85% decrease over the past two weeks in D.C., based on data from the D.C. Police Union. The union expressed its support for Trump’s federal intervention in city policing.

A survey from Harris published on Monday indicated that 54% of voters back Trump’s crime initiative in Washington, D.C. This aligns with claims from the White House about a notable reduction in violence, including reports of periods without any murders occurring.
