Whitmer Rules Out Presidential Run in 2028

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a key Democratic figure and a two-term governor, has expressed that she does not plan to run for president in the 2028 election cycle. This revelation comes as a surprise to many, as some analysts had viewed her as a potential candidate.

“I can tell you that I won’t be one of them in 2028,” Whitmer told reporters in Michigan. She noted that there will be strong contenders aiming for the presidency but made it clear she won’t be part of that contest.

Historically, Whitmer has been seen as a significant player among Democrats who might enter what could be a crowded primary field, especially following the end of President Donald Trump’s term. Her recent comments seem to contradict long-standing expectations about her national political aspirations.

Whitmer’s Evolving Image

As a governor from an important swing state, Whitmer has gained attention for her vocal opposition to Trump during his first term and even served as the Democratic response to his 2020 State of the Union address. However, her relationship with the president shifted during his second term. Notably, a moment from a meeting last year, where she appeared to try to conceal her face while sitting with Trump, gained a lot of media attention and sparked frustration among some Democrats.

She later explained that her presence during the televised briefing was to advocate for Michigan’s interests, even if she disagreed with Trump on many issues discussed.

Democrats Eyeing 2028

With the start of Trump’s second term, Democrats are already looking toward the next election. The potential candidates list includes prominent figures like Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also generating interest for 2028. Interestingly, several governors, including California’s Gavin Newsom and Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker, have also stated they won’t seek the presidency.

Whitmer’s prior visibility, featuring on national platforms and being considered for Biden’s vice presidential pick in 2020, seems significant. This summer, her visit to New Hampshire—an essential primary state—while campaigning for Harris prompted renewed speculation about her future in politics.

Other notable names in the Democratic mix for the 2028 nomination include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg, alongside various senators and former officials who may also enter the fray.
