“I thank God for giving Alex the strength to get through what happened and for being there for Kylie when she needed support the most. I am so proud of you both.”
Police said the suspect, Angel Zapet Alvarado, 26, of Guatemala, was traveling south on Interstate 49 in heavy traffic at 114 mph when he passed Officer Alexandria Duncan's marked patrol unit near milepost 83 at approximately 7:43 p.m. said.
Police said Zapet Alvarado initially showed no signs of stopping, even after Officer Duncan activated his emergency lights and sirens.
Duncan parked the vehicle on the right shoulder of the road and instructed Zapet Alvarado to exit the vehicle.

Police say the man kicked Officer Duncan in the head multiple times.

Finally, Duncan tells the good Samaritan to stay away from the fight, after which she tells the combative Zapet-Alvarado that she's going to shoot him, but he won't budge, so Duncan does as she promised, this time with a gun.
Police said she fired one shot, striking Zapet-Alvarado in the right temple, but he continued to resist arrest and refused Duncan's commands to get on the ground.
Soon after, state troopers arrive and are seen helping Duncan arrest Zapet Alvarado.

Toxicology tests showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.16 and positive cannabinoids. He was transported to the Benton County Sheriff's Office Jail, where he remained, being held for the Department of Homeland Security investigation.
Police said Officer Duncan was treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the assault by suspect Zapet Alvarado.
What happened next?
The State Police Criminal Investigation Division submitted an investigative case file to the prosecutor on Aug. 9, police said, and Benton County Prosecutor Joshua Robinson announced Wednesday that Duncan's use of deadly force did not violate Arkansas law.
“I wholeheartedly support Officer Duncan,” said Capt. Mike Hager. “We tell our officers to trust their instincts when they're on the highway and rely on their experience and training. Anyone who's ever been in an officer's position knows that trusting your instincts keeps you safe and protects and serves the public. In our world, hesitation can cost you your life.”
Hager added, “I thank God for giving Alex the strength to get through what happened and for being there for Kylie when she needed that support the most. I'm so proud of you both.”
