Attack on Nigerian Church Leads to Casualties and Kidnappings

Gunmen reportedly targeted a church in Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals while a pastor and several worshippers were kidnapped, as per police reports and witness accounts.

This violent incident unfolded on Tuesday night in Elku, located in Kwara state, central Nigeria. Videos from local news channels, which have been verified, captured the chaos as gunfire interrupted services at the Christ the Apostle Church, compelling attendees to flee. One video depicted armed assailants storming the church and looting belongings while shots were fired.

In the aftermath, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the governor of Kwara state, called for security forces to be deployed immediately, a sentiment echoed by his spokesperson.

Just days prior, another incident saw gunmen kidnap 25 schoolgirls from a boarding school in Kebbi state, leading to at least one death among the staff. Nafiu Abubakar Kotarkosi, a police spokesperson, noted that these attackers were armed with “sophisticated weapons” and had clashed with security personnel before abducting the girls.

“Joint teams are currently conducting an exhaustive search for potential escape routes and surrounding forests in a coordinated operation aimed at rescuing the kidnapped students and apprehending the offenders,” he added, revealing that there was one fatality and one injury during the chaos.

On a broader scale, President Donald Trump has classified Nigeria as a country of significant concern due to the increasing violence against Christians in the region.

On the same day, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Walz, hosted an event to shed light on the persistent violence affecting Nigeria. He described the killings of Christians there as “genocide disguised as chaos.” Walz emphasized that there is substantial evidence illustrating the severe plight faced by families, religious leaders, and entire church communities—particularly Christians.

“Our entire faith is being snuffed out, one bullet at a time, one burned Bible at a time,” he poignantly remarked.

Notably, rap star Nicki Minaj, an outspoken advocate against Christian persecution, joined the event. She highlighted the grim realities for Christians in Nigeria, affirming that they are being targeted, displaced, and murdered, resulting in ongoing fear in communities.

“This issue is escalating not just in Nigeria but across various regions globally, necessitating urgent action,” Minaj asserted. “It’s about uniting humanity, not taking sides.”
